FORT BONIFACIO, Metro Manila – A Philippine Army military professional was cited and recognized, together with other 34 co-University of the Philippines alumni, during the UP General Alumni Homecoming, held at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman in Quezon City, June 25.
Col Thomas R Sedano Jr., Army’s Civil-Military Operations Group commander and a graduate of UP’s BSFPE’86, was conferred the 2016 UP Alumni Association (UPAA) Distinguished Alumni Award in Poverty Alleviation and Human Development in said occasion.
Colonel Sedano was particularly cited for his leadership, achievements and contributions in his chosen profession, especially for “Project Shoebox” which he initiated and conceptualized.
Project Shoebox is a novel project of the Philippine Army, through the Civil-Military Operations Group, which optimizes the impact of volunteerism among government and non-government organizations which provide school materials and other personal care items enclosed in shoeboxes and being distributed to elementary students of selected barangays under the influence of the New People’s Army and in calamities-stricken areas.
A photo exhibit was also put up for all the awardees to make public their photos depicting them in action while performing their humanitarian activites.
Earlier, a dinner was hosted in honor of the awardees by UP President Mr Alfredo E Pascual, UP President last June 22 at The Executive House, UP Diliman Campus.
Said citation and recognition is a manifestation that Army personnel do excel in other fields not just in war fighting and they live by to the Philippine Army’s core purpose of serving the people and securing the land.
